How I Create AI-Generated Thumbnails (My Exact Process)

Today, I’m sharing another thumbnail prompt with you. But this time, I’m not just sharing a prompt—I’m also going to show you the exact process I use to create my AI-generated thumbnails and how you can do the same. At the end of this article, you’ll find the prompt used to create this thumbnail.

Before we get started, it’s important to understand what a prompt is. A prompt is simply an instruction that tells an AI what you want it to do. Whether you're asking a question, generating an image, creating a design, or writing content, the prompt is what guides the AI toward the result you're looking for.

When it comes to image and thumbnail creation, many people make the mistake of giving AI only a short instruction, such as, “Create a thumbnail like this.” While that may produce a result, it usually won’t be the result you had in mind. AI has access to countless styles, concepts, and design possibilities, so if your instructions are vague, the output will be too.

The key is to be specific.

Before generating a thumbnail, decide exactly what you want. Think about the overall style, the subject, the pose, the placement of elements, the text, the colors, the lighting, the background, and any special effects you want to include. The more details you provide, the easier it becomes for the AI to understand your vision and turn it into a professional-quality design.

My workflow is simple.

I use ChatGPT to help me create and refine prompts, and I use Google Flow to generate the actual thumbnails and images.

Instead of giving AI a one-line instruction, I describe everything from start to finish. For example, I specify where the main subject should be positioned, what expression or pose they should have, where the text should appear, what font style should be used, how the lighting should look, what type of glow or effects should be added, and what kind of background fits the design.

Once I have all of those ideas, I ask ChatGPT (or another AI assistant such as Claude) to organize them into a professional image-generation prompt. After generating the image, I review the result, identify anything that could be improved, and refine the prompt further. This process helps me consistently create higher-quality thumbnails and visuals.

If you're new to prompt writing, don't worry. You don't need to be a professional prompt engineer. Simply focus on describing your idea as clearly as possible. AI can help transform your rough ideas into detailed prompts that produce much better results.

Currently, I use Google Flow because it offers access to Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, and it allows free downloads of high-resolution images up to 2K quality. The image quality is excellent, and it's one of the tools I use most often for thumbnail creation.

Below, you'll find the exact prompt used to create this thumbnail. Feel free to use it as a starting point for your own projects.

And if you ever run out of ideas or find prompt writing difficult, be sure to follow this website. New thumbnail concepts, design ideas, and AI prompts are shared regularly to help inspire your next creation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this prompt without a reference image?

Yes. In most cases, you can generate the thumbnail without using a reference image. However, if you want the thumbnail to feature your own face, you'll need to upload a clear photo of yourself as a reference so the AI can accurately recreate your appearance.

Which AI tool should I use with this prompt?

You can use this prompt with most modern AI image-generation tools. Personally, I use Google Flow because it produces consistent results and makes it easy to work with reference images, but you're free to use whichever platform you prefer.

Why doesn't my result look exactly like the reference thumbnail?

First, make sure you've uploaded the reference image directly into Google Flow along with the prompt. Keep in mind that AI-generated images can vary from one generation to another, even when using the same prompt. If the result isn't quite right, try generating it again or make a few small adjustments to the prompt.

Can I change the text on the banner?

Absolutely. Simply replace "MY $0 THUMBNAIL" with your own title or headline. For the best click-through rate (CTR), keep the text short, bold, and easy to read at a glance.
